Berry Whirligig

1/2 c Sugar
2 tb Cornstarch
1/2 ts Salt
1/4 ts Ground cinnamon
1 c Water
3 c Fresh or frozen blackberries or a mixture of berries

1 c All-purpose flour
2 ts Baking powder
1/2 ts Salt
2 tb Shortening
1 ea Egg -- lightly beaten
2 tb Milk
1/4 c Butter or margarine -- softened
1/2 c Sugar
1 ts Lemon peel -- grated
1/4 ts Ground cinnamon

In a saucepan, combine sugar. cornstarch, salt and cinnamon. Add water. Cook until mixture boils and thickens. Stir in berries and cook over low heat for 5 minutes. Pour into a greased 8-in. square baking pan. Set aside. Combine flour, baking powder and salt in a bowl. Cut in shortening until coarse crumbs form. In another bowl, mix egg and milk. Add to flour mixture; mix to make a smooth dough. Knead for several minutes. Roll into a 12-in. x 8-in. rectangle. Spread with butter. Combine sugar, lemon peel and cinnamon; sprinkle over dough. Starting at a long end, roll up; seal edges. Cut into nine slices. Place slices over berry mixture. Bake at 400 deg. for 22-25 minutes or until golden brown. Yield: 9 servings
